Why Keep Winning? History for Matas (at the 2?), McClung Drops 54, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Last night was unreal, am I right? I still can’t believe I witnessed that scoring outburst from him. Yes, I am obviously talking about Mac McClung setting a new franchise record for the Windy City Bulls.

In all seriousness, watching Bam Adebayo score 83 points against the Washington Wizards—no matter how ugly that fourth quarter looked—was pretty insane. His name will forever be in the record books, just like how Scott Skiles holds the record for most assists in a single game. Things like this happen once in a lifetime, and we’ve been lucky enough to witness this twice. Insane.

Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

© Rhona Wise-Imagn Images Breaking scoring records was in the air last night, and it all tipped off with the Miami Heat–Washington Wizards game, where Bam Adebayo passed Kobe Bryant for the second-most points scored in an NBA game. I’ve seen a ton of discourse and criticism about the performance, almost disregarding its standing because of the number of free throws on the box score. But I watched that game, and it was historic long before the tomfoolery began. Bam had 31 points in the first quarter, when he had attempted just seven free throws. By halftime, he had 43 points on 14 attempts from the charity stripe. And by the end of the third quarter, he already had 62 points and had passed LeBron James’ single-game scoring record in Heat franchise history. At that point, the game was already on the level of Kobe’s 62-points-in-three-quarters performance against the Mavericks. The only difference was that the Washington Wizards were doing absolutely nothing to stop Bam, and he had the green light to try to go for the record. In the fourth quarter, out of frustration, and not wanting to be the team that let Bam get to 83 points, the Wizards started triple-teaming him and almost fouling him on every possession to discourage him from even trying. But that only meant those fouls, which were genuine fouls, allowed Bam to rack up points at the line. It may not have looked pretty, but it’s not like he had much of a choice. This game is historic, even if it had a ton of free throws and came against one of the worst defenses in the NBA. And unfortunately, there’s not much anyone can do to take that away from Bam. All of that probably won’t matter for long because Matas Buzelis is clearly going to put up 90 before his career is all said and done. Last night, he scored a career-high 41 points in a win against the Golden State Warriors. That now makes him the youngest player in Bulls history to record 40+ points in a win, passing Michael Jordan. Matas is only 21 and is taking a sophomore leap that shows clear signs of superstardom on the way. And I do think it helps when your running mate loves to pass the ball to you, as Josh Giddey himself had 17 assists on the night.

— Real App (@realapp) March 11, 2026 A welcome change that I think helped Matas excel was the fact that he was playing more in a guard/forward role rather than the power forward position he’s been forced into for most of this season. And I think it’s amazing. Matas is a bit too lean to be a power forward in the NBA, but as a SG/SF he’s a matchup nightmare. This is exactly why Leonard Miller also fits this youth movement, because with him in the lineup, Matas can play the position he’s best at. It’s also why, when it comes to the 2026 NBA Draft, the Bulls should prioritize drafting a star guard or big man—someone who would still allow Matas to remain the small forward of this team for the foreseeable future. Despite that impressive performance, it still led the Chicago Bulls to a win, something that has to stop. At the end of February, the Bulls were one loss away from having a top-eight pick in the loaded 2026 NBA Draft. After winning three of their last five games, they are now half a game behind the Milwaukee Bucks and in danger of falling to the tenth-best lottery odds. These wins aren’t going to get them into a play-in spot, and I just don’t think they understand the gravity of what’s going on in the NBA. All of the bottom teams have been aggressively tanking, literally sitting down and benching any player who could even remotely contribute to winning basketball. The Bulls should be in that same boat, rolling out a ridiculous starting lineup like Rob Dillingham, Yuki Kawamura, Mac McClung, Guerschon Yabusele, and Lachlan Olbrich. That’s what a tank is supposed to look like—not forcing overtime against a play-in team in the Western Conference just to pick up a win that ultimately doesn’t matter. Actually… scratch that. Mac McClung is also way too good to be part of the tank. Last night, he scored a Windy City Bulls franchise-record 54 points on nine made threes and only five free throws attempted. He also picked up 10 assists and seven rebounds and is clearly on track for another NBA G-League MVP, averaging 30 points and eight assists per game.
