ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new report from AAA found that 15% of crashes across the U.S. in 2023 involved a driver who took off, rather than staying to help. That’s the highest percentage on record.

AAA released the report on Wednesday, which found that the U.S. had 900,000 hit-and-run crashes in 2023, the most recent complete data available. When it comes to deadly hit and runs, the report had numbers going back to 1975. One graph shows deadly hit-and-run crashes trending upward since 2010, with fewer than 1,500 that year compared to 2,872 for the year 2023. You can see the full report here.

For New York State, 7,401 people died in hit and runs from 2017 through 2023. In that time, 8% of all hit and runs were deadly. News10NBC covered several deadly hit and runs recently, including the death of a 49-year-old man on West Broad Street and a 34-year-old man on South Union Street.

The report found that people are much more likely to be hit while walking or cycling when it’s dark out, either early morning or late at night. In total, 1 in 4 walkers and nearly as many cyclists who died in 2023 crashes were hit by a driver who fled the scene.
