Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei “is safe,” according to the son of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as questions swirl over his public absence and rumors he was wounded during US-Israeli bombing on the country.
“I heard reports that Agha Mojtaba had been injured,” said Yousef Pezeshkian, in a report published by the semi-official Iranian news agency ISNA Wednesday.
“I asked some people who were in contact with him. They said that, thank God, he is safe and there are no concerns,” Pezeshkian added.
The comments come after Khamenei – the son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – was named as Iran’s new spiritual leader and highest authority on Sunday. He has not been seen in public since, nor has a written statement been issued by him or his office.
Israel targeted Mojtaba Khamenei last week, according to an Israeli source familiar with the matter. But Israel believes he was only injured in the attempt.
In the days after his induction, Iranian state media churned out archival footage to present Khamenei, while propaganda networks generated AI videos and images of the new leader.
Within the capital Tehran, a central mural displaying the official state-backed narrative at Vali Asr Square shows a young Khamanei receiving the Iranian flag from his father – inadvertently drawing attention to the contradictory father-to-son succession in a system born from anti-hereditary monarchy revolution.
