ROCHESTER, NY – After firing Mike Hasen on Monday, the Knighthawks have announced they’ve hired Randy Mearns as their interim head coach. Mearns spent seven seasons as a player in Rochester, winning a championship in 1997.
“I would like to thank Dan Carey and the entire Knighthawks organization for this incredible opportunity to join a group of men trying to accomplish something amazing: Winning an NLL Championship,” wrote Mearns in a press release. “I am humbled and excited to build on the foundation set forth by Mike Hasen and (former assistant coach) Pat O’Toole, and can’t wait to get started. It feels good to be back home.”
Mearns has coached collegiately since 1998, first with Canisius from 1998 to 2017 and again with St. Bonaventure from 2017 to 2025. In 26 seasons, he went 124-219 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament twice.
In his seven seasons in Rochester, Mearns went to four title games, winning one in 1997 and was the team’s captain.
“Randy Mearns is a true professional who brings a tremendous amount of energy, experience, and a deep wealth of lacrosse knowledge,” wrote Dan Carey, Rochester’s general manager in press release. “We are excited to add his leadership and passion for the game to the organization.”
Mearns also served as the head coach of Team Canada, winning gold at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship.
The 5-6 Knighthawks will travel to Las Vegas for a Sunday tilt against the Las Vegas Desert Dogs. Rochester currently sits in ninth place of the National Lacrosse League, one spot out of playoff position.
