ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Ticketmaster has reached a $280 million settlement with the Justice Department to resolve a high-profile antitrust case. The settlement allows Ticketmaster to remain with its parent company, Live Nation, and introduces a standalone ticketing system for third-party companies like SeatGeek and StubHub to offer primary tickets.
Locally, a Ticketmaster event faced customer difficulties due to a third-party site when purchasing tickets for the Stars on Ice event coming to Rochester in May.
Sara Schond, a former figure skater, was excited to see the Olympic figure skaters perform. However, she encountered a ticket-buying mix-up. Schond said she purchased tickets from Ticketmaster’s website but later discovered they were from a third-party site, GoTickets.com.
“The receipt actually hadn’t come from Ticketmaster. It had come from GoTickets.com. So I really wasn’t aware that I had made a purchase through a third party, until that minute,” Schond said.
Schond’s ticket was marked as a resale ticket, but there was no indication of the reseller’s identity on Ticketmaster.com. Schond reached out to GoTickets and Ticketmaster but received conflicting information about the ticket cancellation.
“Actually, [a representative] told me that Ticketmaster was the one who canceled the tickets, but didn’t really give a reason…Ticketmaster said it was GoTickets’ fault, GoTickets said it was Ticketmaster’s fault. So I really didn’t know kind of where to go from there,” Schond said.
Schond expressed caution about future online ticket purchases. “I definitely will be more wary of buying tickets anywhere online in the future,” she said.
GoTickets has offered Schond alternative seats, and she is deciding between that and a refund.
A Ticketmaster spokesperson provided the following statement:
“On background, several fans had their tickets for this event canceled by Blue Cross Arena because they were purchased with an unauthorized code. Fans who purchased tickets directly through Ticketmaster will receive a full refund on their original method of payment within 5-7 business days. Fans who purchased tickets through third-party platforms will have to reach out to their point of purchase for any available refund options.”
