SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — First baseman Rafael Devers is slated to return to the starting lineup on Monday afternoon against the Los Angeles Angels at Scottsdale Stadium after missing the last week-and-a-half with left hamstring tightness.
Devers, 29, has only played three Cactus League games this spring, his last being on Feb. 26. He was originally in the starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Feb. 27 but was scratched before first pitch.
“I think that could’ve been a day or two earlier, but a little cautionary on that,” manager Tony Vitello said Monday morning. “But also, kind of seeing the schedule makes it a little easier being at home. He’ll probably play in a road game before the whole deal is over with, but little easier for his routine as far as making sure he’s prepped. Good for him to be out there.”
Along with Devers, the Giants announced that outfielder Drew Gilbert (left shoulder impingement) began throwing on Sunday and has been cleared to DH in spring games, while left-hander Erik Miller is scheduled to throw a live bullpen on Tuesday.
Gilbert, 25, is one of many outfielders competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster but has fallen behind in the competition since he hasn’t appeared in a Cactus League game since Feb. 25. With the Giants’ entire starting outfield currently competing in the World Baseball Classic, Will Brennan (1.079 OPS), Luis Matos (1.173 OPS) and Grant McCray (.906 OPS) have put up compelling cases to make the team out of camp.
“You got four, five, maybe six guys that are big league outfielders out there,” Vitello said. “They’ll sort it out themselves, to an extent. I’m a big believer; there’s enough food on the table for everybody to eat. That doesn’t mean on Opening Day you can play nine outfielders, but if those guys keep improving and showing what they can do, they’re going to get rewarded. They’ll have their time out there to show what they can do. It’s a good problem to have.”
Miller, 28, has yet to appear in a Cactus League game this spring, but he may have enough time to ramp up before the Giants’ first game of the season on March 25. Fellow left-hander Sam Hentges, who signed a one-year, $1.4 million deal this offseason, hasn’t made his Cactus League debut either and is extremely unlikely to be on the Opening Day roster.
While Gilbert and Miller are trending in the right direction, left-hander Reiver Sanmartin will miss up to three months after receiving an MRI that revealed a high-grade strain of his right hip flexor. The 29-year-old Sanmartin sustained the injury during Team Colombia’s exhibition against the Pittsburgh Pirates leading up to the World Baseball Classic.
“It’s tough to find him in a mood where he’s not smiling, but obviously, he kind of knew what he was looking at with some sort of rehab,” Vitello said.
With San Francisco’s bullpen already impacted by injuries, the Giants have reportedly brought back left-handed reliever Joey Lucchesi on a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training.
The 32-year-old Newark Memorial High graduate pitched well for San Francisco in his first season as a full-time reliever, posting a 3.76 ERA and 3.97 FIP over 38 1/3 innings, but the team made a somewhat surprising decision to non-tender Lucchesi last November. Given his experience and the Giants’ rash of injuries, Lucchesi has a fair shot at making the Opening Day roster.
