Mick Schumacher’s first taste of oval racing delivered a dramatic mix of promise, chaos and hard-earned lessons at the IndyCar Phoenix Grand Prix.
The former Haas F1 driver turned heads all weekend at Phoenix Raceway, stunning the paddock with a superb fourth-place qualifying run. Even eventual race winner Josef Newgarden of Team Penske labeled the performance “shockingly good.”
When the green flag dropped, Schumacher quickly discovered just how wild oval racing can be.
“I was surprised at how hectic it is out there,” he said. “The cars come in really fast, and when one comes in, the guys pull right through.”
Running inside the top ten early on, Schumacher looked set for a strong debut – until disaster struck in the pits. A broken pit gun during his first stop ruined the tyre change and dropped him a lap down.
“That basically cost us a lap,” he admitted.
From there, the race became a valuable high-speed classroom. Schumacher used the remaining laps to study tire behavior in traffic.
“It was a good understanding of the whole situation,” he explained.
Though he finished 18th, one lap behind Newgarden, the rookie left Phoenix with pace, experience – and unfinished business.
