CROSS HIM OFF THE LIST: Khalil Mack is Returning to the Chargers ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I could copy and paste the post we did at this time last year about Khalil Mack returning for another season with the Los Angeles Chargers after flirting with the idea of free agency, but that would be lazy.

Instead, you’ll get a fresh post from me. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the details of Mack’s return to Los Angeles:

ESPN sources: Nine-time Pro-Bowl edge Khalil Mack reached agreement today with the Chargers on a one-year deal, and he now will be returning to Los Angeles for his 13th NFL season. Mack would have been a free agent this week, but no longer. pic.twitter.com/7inaM0f3Cz

No Khalil Mack, no problem — Bears have other EDGE options

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports (via Twitter/X) it is a one-year pact worth $18 million fully guaranteed. When we discussed Mack as a possible free-agent fit for a Chicago Bears team in search of a veteran edge presence this offseason, his contract projection from Pro Football Focus came in at one-year and $14 million. So the deal he is reportedly set to receive from the Chargers is a little north of that forecasted number. My takeaway on that front is that I see this deal as a baseline for what veteran edge help will cost teams in the market.

With Mack going back to the Chargers, I’m sure you’re curious about who could be available when free agency negotiations can begin at 11 a.m. on Monday. Thankfully, teammate Patrick Flowers has a collection of players who are conceivable fits for Chicago’s football team. That group includes Jaelan Phillips, Odafe Oweh, Boye Mafe, and Joey Bosa. Not listed in the sentence before this one is Cam Jordan, who has yet to reach a contractual agreement with the New Orleans Saints. It is possible that the 36-year-old could reunite with Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, who coached him while in New Orleans from 2015 to 2024.

In the end, I feel bad for Bears fans who were holding out hope that General Manager Ryan Poles could bring back Khalil Mack and get those old jerseys out of mothballs this upcoming season. And while I suppose they still can (because who doesn’t love a good throwback?), they won’t be doing it because there is a return of the Mack to Soldier Field.
