Gabriel Moreno clubs 460-foot home run, Jose Fernandez stays hot in spring training ...Middle East

SCOTTSDALE — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno smashed the farthest recorded home run of his career in a Cactus League game on Saturday, according to Statcast.

Moreno clubbed a sinker from San Francisco Giants right-hander JT Brubaker 460 feet to left field, which nearly cleared the lawn.

It was a no-doubter, coming off the bat at 112.8 mph, which is harder than any ball he’s hit in a major league game, including the regular season, postseason and spring training where Statcast data was available.

“Felt pretty good,” Moreno told Arizona Sports. “Keep making adjustments to be ready for Opening Day.”

Moreno’s longest regular season home run was a 433-footer.

The catcher hit a career-high nine home runs last season, albeit in only 83 games as he missed time with a fractured hand. Moreno also set a career high in slugging at .433, as he took steps as an offensive threat in his third year with the club.

With Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo making up a daunting top of the order, the D-backs could use Moreno to continue his upward trajectory at the plate and stay healthy to add depth to the lineup.

Moreno said adding power was something he put work into this offseason.

“I worked a lot this offseason on hitting,” Moreno said. “I hit a lot. Corbin gave me some tips, too. I try to put that work I did in the offseason here in spring and keep making adjustments.”

Moreno has been robbed of a couple hits this spring but has been mostly quiet at the plate (.174 average). That’s how he started spring last year before heating up ahead of the season opener.

“He’s a good hitter. He’s gonna get his hits,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’ll be fine, but it was nice to see him have some success.”

Jose Fernandez stays hot in spring training

Jose Fernandez, a 22-year-old infield prospect on the 40-man roster, remains one of the hottest hitters on the team this spring. Fernandez smoked a double to the wall in left-center field on Saturday and then took it a step further with a home run in his next at-bat.

He leads the D-backs with three home runs this spring.

“I’ve felt great, thank God,” Fernandez said in Spanish. “The hard work is paying off. … The most important thing is to learn. I’m here grabbing good things from each of my teammates. Enjoying this moment to the fullest.”

Fernandez has put 18 balls into play this spring, and 13 have have been hit over 100 mph off the bat, per Statcast. Another two were over 95 mph, which is the definition of a hard-hit ball.

There’s been some swing-and-miss as to be expected from a young hitter who has not even played Triple-A ball yet, but everything has come off his bat hot.

“Great swing plane, great awareness of the plate as to how he’s getting worked, can’t duplicate pitches to him, he’s handling velocity, so he’s done a really nice job offensively,” Lovullo said.

Fernandez had a learning moment defensively when he threw home off-balanced on a ground ball, which was late and allowed the batter to reach base safely. Lovullo said that will be coached up.

Diamondbacks notes

– Paul Sewald delivered a great inning of work against the Giants, hitting 92.9 mph with his fastball in a 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts. Brandyn Garcia also threw a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.

– How’s Jordan Lawlar looking in center field? Let’s ask a really good defensive outfielder he’s working with daily: “He’s a great athlete,” Jorge Barrosa told Arizona Sports. “I know he’s going to be great at it. I saw a couple of days ago him making a couple of good plays. Pretty happy to see him growing in that area.”

– Outfield prospect Druw Jones delivered two hits for the Netherlands against Nicaragua on Saturday in a walk-off win. Atlanta’s Ozzie Albies hit the walk-off home run.

– Kevin Ginkel will start Sunday’s game at the Cincinnati Reds in Goodyear. Kelly will throw a live batting practice session on the backfields.
