Dillon Brooks apologized to his Phoenix Suns teammates and coaches following an arrest early Friday morning for suspicion of driving under the influence, Collin Gillespie told reporters.
Brooks was suspected to be under the influence of marijuana when he was stopped by the Scottsdale Police Department for traffic violations, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.
“Just hate to see it for him. But he’s a human, we’re all humans,” Gillespie said after Phoenix’s 118-116 win on Friday. “We’re not above anybody else, and we all make mistakes. He knows that, he owned it, apologized to the team.
“But we got his back … we all make mistakes, learn from it. He’s just in the public eye much more than any other regular human being. That stuff goes on every day, you just don’t hear about it from other people because it’s not Dillon Brooks per se. It doesn’t make it right, we’re just happy that he’s OK and nobody else was hurt.”

Gillespie, anointed by Brooks as “Villain Jr.” earlier in the season, said he didn’t view the arrest as a distraction because Brooks was in the building for shootaround in the hours following his release.
Brooks, who was not charged with a crime, is in his first year with the Suns after being acquired in the offseason trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets.
He is currently sidelined with a fractured left hand, and the team said on Feb. 24 he would be reevaluated in four to six weeks, a time frame that could see him return in the last week of March through the end of the first week in April.
Brooks is averaging 20.9 points, a career-high, along with 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
He was suspended for the first game out of the NBA All-Star break after he reached his 16th technical, which triggers a suspension by league rule.
