Man sentenced to over 150 years of prison time for selling meth, fentanyl in Weld County ...Saudi Arabia

A man was sentenced to more than 150 years in prison for distributing more than 11 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 6,000 fentanyl pills across Weld County.

Carlos Gonzalez-Del Hoyo, 44, was sentenced to 159 years at the Colorado Department of Corrections by Weld County District Court Judge Annette Kundelius during a sentencing hearing Friday. Gonzalez-Del Hoyo was found guilty in January on three charges of distributing methamphetamine and three charges of distributing fentanyl.

He was sentenced to 32 years in prison for each of two counts of distributing meth and two counts of distributing fentanyl, 25 years for an additional count of distributing methamphetamine and six years for an additional count of distributing fentanyl.

The sentences, which total 159 years, will run consecutively.

He was also sentenced to 10 years of parole after completing his prison sentence.

Weld County Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia said that while Gonzalez-Del Hoyo was struggling with addiction himself, he let the idea of profits from distributing fentanyl pills and methamphetamine overrule the knowledge of the harm he was committing.

“Make no qualms about it, he was a businessman,” Pirraglia said.

He explained that the amount for a fatal dose of fentanyl is small enough to fit on the tip of a pencil, and Gonzalez-Del Hoyo had about 6,000 pills at the time of his arrest. He said that those pills would have been enough to kill 88% of Weld County residents through a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Kundelius said she felt comfortable handing down the lengthy sentence because she does not believe he is at a point where he truly wants to get better. She said that he had to be high up in the distribution chain to have more than 11 pounds of methamphetamine and over 6,000 fentanyl pills when he was arrested. She also highlighted that he was on parole for a motor vehicle theft conviction in Adams County when he was arrested.

“Those are not the actions of a person who wants to change their ways and get help, not of somebody who has learned from their mistakes and making changes to be a better member of the community,” Kundelius said.

The judge acknowledged that Gonzalez-Del Hoyo was struggling with his own addiction and he was a victim of a larger drug distribution ring, but she said that he continuously had no regard for the people he harmed by selling them drugs. She said that he worked in construction, had steady employment and made an honest living, so him turning to selling drugs was a decision based on greed.

Gonzalez-Del Hoyo, who spoke to the court through a Spanish-language interpreter, said he apologized for his actions and said that he let his addiction get the better of him. He said that now that he is sober, he can better see the harm he did to others.

Kundelius said a pre-sentencing investigation report indicated that Gonzales-Del Hoyo was not truly interested in sobriety and only got sober to get a shorter sentence. She said that court-ordered substance abuse treatment won’t work unless he decides to get sober for himself, a choice he could have made when he was on probation in 2024.

Instead, he was arrested in Greeley while he was on parole during a November 2024 traffic stop. Greeley police seized roughly 6,000 counterfeit pills containing fentanyl and about 11 pounds of methamphetamine during the stop.

The Weld County Drug Task Force began investigating Gonzalez-Del Hoyo in September 2024, after an informant reported that he had been selling large quantities of drugs in Weld County and throughout northern Colorado.
