No. 11-seeded Alabama beat No. 6 seed Tennessee 76-64 in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday night, avenging its close loss to the Volunteers in the regular season.
“This is a great team win. A lot of grit, a lot of toughness,” head coach Kristy Curry said.
The Crimson Tide was led in scoring by guard Jessica Timmons, who bounced back from her 7-point outing Wednesday by putting in 23. Guard Ta’Mia Scott also had a big performance, scoring 20 points and finishing second on the team in rebounds with five while playing the second-most minutes behind Timmons.
Unlike the up-and-down contest Alabama played against this team back in January, and unlike a lot of the close bouts the team has fought this season, this one was never in question. It was a wire-to-wire victory for an Alabama team that’s now in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2024.
After 7-point and 3-point wins in the first two quarters, the Crimson Tide led 39-29 at the break. The scoring pattern in the first half was similar to what it would be for the entire game — Timmons had 12 and Scott had 10.
To start the third, Scott and Volunteer guard Mia Pauldo exchanged 3-pointers and kept the gap at 10. However, it would never again be that close after, in a sequence indicative of the entire game, Timmons hit a 3-pointer and then a 2-point jump shot off a turnover all within five seconds. Alabama suddenly led by 15, and it held Tennessee to that deficit the rest of the quarter.
It was 61-46 going into the fourth, and the Crimson Tide used offensive consistency to hold off any Tennessee comeback and take home the win.
More than just vengeance for a disappointing home loss, this game was also encouraging for fans who have watched this squad have long stretches of offensive struggles within games. There was no such stretch in this game, and it led to a thorough win that shows just how much potential this Alabama team has when firing on all cylinders.
“I thought we played good team basketball,” Curry said. “Just really happy for our team to survive and advance and get to another day.”
The tournament gauntlet continues on Friday. Alabama plays No. 3 seed Texas, a team it just lost to by single digits less than a week ago. Viewers can tune in to SEC Network at 7:30 p.m. CT.
