WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and other lawmakers announced a push to update and expand Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for seniors and Americans with disabilities.
The proposed Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act aims to modernize the program for the first time in more than 50 years.
The bill would expand eligibility, increase cash payments, and raise asset limits to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples
The legislation would also eliminate penalties for saving money, streamline payments, and extend benefits to U.S. territories.
