ALBANY, N.Y. — A new proposal at the state capitol could increase pay for New York’s 213 state lawmakers by 26%.
State Sen. James Sanders Jr. introduced the bill to raise lawmaker salaries to $180,000, citing expanded duties and high living costs.
In 2022, lawmakers’ pay increased to the current highest in the nation at $142,000. Additionally, they receive a per diem allowance of $203 a day for travel, hotel, and meals.
These expenses are covered by taxpayers.
