Too often the forgotten man in the Chicago Cubs’ pitching mix, Javier Assad just puts his head down and succeeds. Whatever the role, whatever the timeline, and, today, whatever the format.
Assad was tapped to start Team Mexico’s opening game against Great Britain today in the World Baseball Classic, and he was fantastic:

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) March 6, 2026Javier Assad threw 51 pitches in the outing, allowing nothing, and continuing to stretch himself out for the MLB regular season. He’s done this before for Team Mexico, and it’s really impressive how reliable he is in any capacity.
Of course, that reliability and flexibility sometimes works to his detriment, as the 28-year-old righty, who has known nothing but success over his 331.0 innings’ worth of big league opportunities, is currently on the outside looking in with respect to the Cubs’ rotation competition. Indeed, he likely wouldn’t even slot into the 6th spot right now if there were a need, because Colin Rea is under contract, was very good last year, is also stretching out, and cannot be optioned to Triple-A.
Javier Assad, however, does have an option year remaining, which means his situation allows the Cubs the flexibility to send him to Iowa at the end of Spring Training to stay stretched out. And, if there were a need for a spot start or for a guy in a swing capacity in the bullpen, that’s when Javier Assad would get the call. Despite the fact that, were he in 10 or so different organizations, he’d be a super-duper obvious inclusion in their Opening Day rotation. It’s the pain of being optionable/swing-able in an organization that has done a very good job building up starting pitching depth at the big league level. It inarguably helps the 2026 Chicago Cubs, but I feel like it’s gotta be at least a little thankless for Assad, given his success.
Meantime, I hope he pitches well in another opportunity for Team Mexico, and then somehow gets a shot later this year to keep doing what he can do in the big leagues.
