RCSD students speak about issues important to them for Project Soapbox ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students from the Rochester City School District took the stage on Friday to voice their thoughts on issues important to them.

The event was part of Project Soapbox, a national initiative that empowers young people to share ideas for change. Students delivered two-minute speeches on topics such as gun violence, bullying, college costs, and LGBTQ rights.

“They have to research. They have to explore their community. They have to understand the history,” said Ryan Keating, RCSD Executive Director of Social Studies. “Often, they have to understand the policies around the issues that they’re looking at. And then on top of that, they don’t just perseverate around the issue. They really have to think of what could help solve whatever this problem is. So there’s a lot that goes into what students are doing here. And then on top of that, the public speaking component.”

Some of the day’s speakers may advance to the national Soapbox forum in Chicago later this year.
