Overnight NHL Trade Action: John Carlson to Ducks, Conor Garland to Columbus, Sabres Add Three ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

If you weren’t aware, the NHL’s roster limit of 23 active players is no longer in place as of midnight last night/this morning. As long as your roster us under the upper limit of the salary cap, you can have as many guys on your NHL roster as you want.

Which means NHL front offices borrowed from Eric Clapton. After midnight, they let it all hang down. Three significant trades went down overnight while we — including one of the traded players — were sleeping.

Ducks acquire John Carlsson

The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals for a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in 2027. The condition on the first-round pick: if the Ducks do not qualify for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, they will have the option to retain their first-round selection in the 2026 draft and instead send the Capitals their first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. (The Ducks are currently in second place in the Pacific Division.)

Carlson, 36, has appeared in 1,143 career regular-season games. Every one of them was with the Washington Capitals.

The trade happened so late that John Carlson was asleep and didn’t find out until this morning. Tough trade for the Caps obviously, but their play since the break forced them to be realistic (Dowd trade as well). Having said that, they tried on Connor Garland and will try to add…

Conor to Columbus

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Conor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in 2028.

Garland, who turns 30 on March 11, has a six-year extension that carries both a $6M cap hit and a no-move clause for the first three years (it’s a 15-team no-trade list for the final three years of the contract).

It will be interesting to see if Columbus is now done adding and needs to move a body or two out — and if this deal closes the books on their interest in bringing their former captain, Nick Foligno, back.

Schenn, Stanley and Carrick to Buffalo

After their trade for Blues defensemen Colton Parayko was declined by the player, the Sabres were able to add two impact defensemen from Winnipeg.

Buffalo acquired defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets for forward Isak Rosen, defenseman Jacob Bryson, a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2026.
