I’m not sure the Bears had much of a realistic choice but to trade D.J. Moore, but it’s wild that it finally happened. And the fact they got a second rounder is pretty impressive.
The Cubs beat the Diamondbacks 8-1 yesterday, with most of the regulars in action and also doing a lot of the damage. All of Michael Busch, Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, Carson Kelly, and Ian Happ participated in the run generating or run scoring, with Swanson and Kelly going deep. Michael Conforto had a single, a double, and a walk in the game. Craig Counsell’s son Brady was a recent Diamondbacks draft pick, and the two got to share a pretty special moment before the game:Father/son lineup exchange pic.twitter.com/KboJ8gDU1n
— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) March 5, 2026 Dansby Swanson now has the 19th highest spring OPS in baseball at 1.600 (min. 10 PAs). This has been a Not Serious But Accurate bullet. More here at the Sun-Times on how Swanson tweaked his offseason work to try to get out of a bit of an offensive rut (less mechanical/drill work, more getting back to being athletic). Ope, maybe the Cubs’ eight runs weren’t all that much:Looks like MLB was trying out a new ball today pic.twitter.com/v3ApGwECRM
— swilly ☻ (@swillysports) March 6, 2026 Colin Rea made the start in that one, and got up to 57 pitches (7 different pitch types). The Cubs obviously had to stretch him out this Spring as the sixth-ish starting pitcher, but you do wonder if at some point in the coming weeks they’ll throttle him down into long relief appearances, since that is likely to be his role coming out of Spring Training. That is to say, not sure how much higher they’re going to build his pitch count (you typically want your starters above 75 pitches in their final Spring Training outing). Craig Counsell confirmed this week that, yes, if everyone is healthy then Rea presumably comes out of the bullpen (but, watching his comments, you could tell he hated to even say that, knowing that Things Can Happen). It’s possible the Cubs don’t actually throttle Rea down and leave him available to make a start within those first two weeks if needed, and otherwise just trust his ability to rapidly shift over into relief mode if necessary. It can be hard to change your routine like that on a dime, but the guys who can do it are quite valuable. It’s a lot of why the Cubs have wanted to retain Rea, even with a crowded rotation group. “These things often take care of themselves” is a roster crowding cliche because it’s so often true, but rarely do you see these situations play out in such an immediate and straight line. — Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) March 5, 2026 Although Peña isn’t expected to be out for too long, I’m sure the Astros don’t hate that they now have Isaac Paredes available to just play third base, while Carlos Correa covers shortstop. This is why having too many players for too few spots is always the best spring problem to have (with apologies to, for example, Cubs starting pitchers who get optioned to Iowa because everyone stayed healthy). Love Joe Maddon for all that he did with the Cubs. But if he thinks there is no managerial or player strategy tied to the three-batter minimum rule, or the free runner on second base … :"Three-batter minimum, get rid of it. Bigger bases, limiting throwovers, get rid of it. Runner on second base, get rid of it."Joe Maddon wants to "get the real game back" but does believe the pitch clock and PitchCom were necessary changes. pic.twitter.com/D2n37Ytv7I

— World Baseball Classic (@WBCBaseball) March 6, 2026 That wound up a mercy rule situation, with Shohei Ohtani having a monster game to open up Team Japan’s run. Seiya Suzuki had a hit, a walk, and scored a couple runs while playing center field and right field. — Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) March 6, 2026 He apparently confirmed after the game that it was not personal but was a competitive thing, which, I do get wanting to stay focused and caring and being passionate and all that … but the dude just wants to say hi, you know? Not really sure how that diminishes the competition. Shohei Ohtani is the best player in the universe, and you think he’d be out there telling someone he doesn’t shake hands during the game? Think the fact that he does cheerily interact with opponents makes him less good? Could he be even BETTER if he were a hardo? A good read at FanGraphs on what has gone wrong so far for Roki Sasaki, for whom I will continue to wish nothing but the best of health and the worst of results. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, mind you, but that whole IFA process was a farce from the jump, with some (reportedly) questionable behavior, pumping teams for helpful information with maybe no intention of seriously considering them. In no universe do I want to see him or the Dodgers succeed after that.
