First Alert Weather: Ice will melt and fog will lift this morning ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Overnight freezing rain left over a tenth of an inch of ice coating cars, trees, mailboxes, as well as any untreated surface… So watch your step this morning as parking lots, driveways, stairs, and sidewalks are likely to be slippery. Treated roads will be fine, but overpasses and bridges may still be a little icy. We’re also dealing with patchy fog that is reducing visibility in spots. The ice will melt and the fog will lift as temperatures rise through the morning. We should be above freezing between 8-9am. The rest of our Friday will be cloudy, but temperatures become mild this afternoon with highs ranging from the upper 40s along the lakeshore to mid/upper 50s in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier.

A warm front passes through overnight which will bring in much warmer air for tomorrow. We likely will break the record of 68 degrees set in 2012 by reaching 70 degrees for the first time since October 19th of last year. However, with that warmth comes our first thunderstorms of the season. We may see some heavy scattered showers with a rumble of thunder early in the morning, but more likely we will see a line of thunderstorms in the mid to late afternoon. Shear is ample, but instability is limited… In other words, storms are unlikely to be severe at this time, but there is still that marginal chance. The main impact from these storms will be gusty winds and possibly small hail. Gusts may exceed 40 MPH. Check back in for updates, as we are still Green on the Threat Tracker but if things start looking dicey we will let you know.

We lose an hour of sleep Saturday night but move our sunset time down to 7:08pm for Sunday… Cooler that day but dry and mostly sunny. Monday we’re back in the 60s and still mostly sunny… Temperatures stay mild through Wednesday morning, but will drop sharply afterwards. We’ll be back to the 30s Thursday. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is not looking great right now with cold temperatures and possible mixed precipitation, but there is still plenty of time for that forecast to change, so stay tuned.
