ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A senior at Brighton High School is being honored for rescuing someone by performing first aid during a medical emergency at a swim meet.
Jane Homes is one of this year’s recipients of the Do the Right Thing awards. She was getting ready to jump into the pool when she noticed a parent suffering from an emergency. She rendered aid and directed others to help.
Turns out, Jane is a second lieutenant in the Penfield EMT Explorers Program and a certified lifeguard. She spoke about her actions that day.
“I didn’t seem like anyone else really knew what to do. I think people freeze a lot in those situations. I’m a lieutenant at the Explorers base, and one of the things I teach the new Explorers is that it’s kind of important to have someone delegating tasks and taking control,” she said.
Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello nominated Jane after he was at the swim meet and saw her jump into action.
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
