Our very banged-up Chicago Bulls played… competent defense, including savvy rotations in late-game situations, to beat a probable playoff team on its homecourt! What is this, January? Somehow, Chicago opened its five-game Western Conference road trip with a last-second victory against Nick Richards’ former squad, the Phoenix Suns, on Thursday night.
The Bulls never trailed, and managed to control their turnovers (notching a relatively decent 13 picks) after some rough recent nights in that department. Remember, this was a Bulls team missing key rotation pieces Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis, Jalen Smith, Jaden Ivey, Patrick Williams and Zach Collins. But it didn’t seem to matter much.
Smith and Williams, by the way, are expected to return at some point on this road tilt.
Chicago led Phoenix 55-50 at the break, powered by 16 first-half points from new trade addition Collin Sexton, en route to his best night as a Bull.
The Bulls led by as many as 11 points in the game’s first three quarters — and even 12 in the fourth — but the Suns seemed to remember they were the Suns late.
How the Bulls Survived a Late Suns Rally
Anna Carrington-Imagn ImagesAt one point in the second half, Phoenix went on a brutal stretch of 15 consecutive missed triple tries.
A Grayson Allen 3-pointer ended the drought at the 4:22 mark, helping get the Suns back within single digits of Chicago, 98-91. It helped spark an 8-0 Suns run, pulling the Suns within four points.
A Tre Jones driving layup ended a nearly four-minute scoring drought for Chicago, but the Bulls’ distracted defense on the other end allowed Chicago to give it right back. Isaac Okoro was whistled for a charge on a driving Amir Coffey. He split his free throws, and suddenly it was a one-possession game.
Both squads struggled to convert on pretty good paint looks. A Sexton dish to undersized starting center Guerschon Yabusele in the corner put Chicago up by two possessions, 103-97. But some inattentive perimeter coverage on Coffey allowed the swingman to respond with a triple near the top of the arc, bringing the Suns within a possession again, 103-100. Tre Jones drove into Coffey, drawing a pair of free throws. He split them, continuing a trend of awful foul line shooting from both clubs.
Five-time All-Star Suns guard Devin Booker pulled up and easily knocked down an answer from distance. Suddenly, it was a one-point game with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
A horrific turnover from Nick Richards off an inbounds pass almost cost the Bulls everything — but luckily, after the Suns missed everything, the ex-Phoenix big managed to secure a rebound and go 1-for-2 foul line takes with 4.4 seconds left. Isaac Okoro scrambled for the board, Tre Jones secured the loose ball and heaved it into the heavens, maintaining that 105-103 edge as time expired.

Collin Sexton logged his first 30-point game in a year, and his first as a Bull. It was his third consecutive contest of scoring 20 or more points. Jones finished with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from the foul line, plus six rebounds and five dimes. Richards pulled down 11 boards in 29 minutes.
Next up for the Bulls is a Sunday road tilt against the league’s worst team by record, the hapless Sacramento Kings. Will Chicago win two in a row? As Bleacher Nation alum Elias Schuster observes, the win pulls the Bulls within one game of the Milwaukee Bucks. Should they surpass Giannis Antetokounmpo and co., they’ll worsen their own shot at lottery luck.
