Powers carries the third-largest cap hit on the roster this upcoming season, according to Spotrac, with that number being $18.1M.
As first reported by Mike Klis on Thursday evening, the Broncos are not restructuring, extending, trading, or releasing him — they are heading into this upcoming season with Powers at that price point.
While the price point is certainly high, Powers doesn’t have any more guaranteed money on his deal, but he’s an important piece to the Broncos’ offensive line at left guard.
Powers and the Broncos’ run game really felt like it started to get going, especially on the road in Week 5 when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. The veteran guard pulled to the right side of the offensive formation on one play that saw J.K. Dobbins follow behind him patiently for a touchdown in Denver’s impressive road win.
Unfortunately for Powers, he suffered a torn bicep in that game, which required surgery and landed him on injured reserve until mid-December. For the Broncos, keeping the offensive line the same for Bo Nix as he enters his third season in the league was important to Sean Payton and George Paton, and gives them a chance to develop their roster further behind him, where he could eventually earn another extension, or a younger player could find himself in a position to take over after 2026.
Alex Palczewski could very well be the name that takes over in 2027, potentially, after the Broncos signed him to a two-year deal on Thursday afternoon.
Regardless, keeping continuity in the trenches was the right move for this upcoming season as the Broncos aim to make it back to the AFC Championship and hopefully Super Bowl 61.
