Alabama picked up a pair of midweek wins, narrowly beating Jacksonville State 6-5 on Tuesday before cruising past Alabama State 13-4 on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s game: Alabama 6, Jacksonville State 5
Alabama took down Jacksonville State 6-5 on Tuesday to end the Gamecocks’ 10-game win streak.
“Good win tonight,” head coach Rob Vaughn said. “That’s one of the hottest teams in college baseball right now. They dropped their first two, and they go rattle off 10 in a row.”
Designated hitter Brady Neal got the scoring started early for the Crimson Tide, crushing a two-run home run into the visitor’s bullpen to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Luke Vaughn then worked a walk, followed by a rocket single to right field from catcher John Lemm to end the Gamecocks’ starting pitcher Fisher Cantrell’s day after recording just one out.
Third baseman Jason Torres introduced the Gamecocks’ new pitcher, Maddox McDougall, by laying down a perfectly executed RBI bunt single to drive in Vaughn and extend the Crimson Tide’s lead to 3-0.
The Gamecocks quickly responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second, thanks to a two-run single from Luke Williams, cutting the Crimson Tide’s lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the third, the Crimson Tide extended its lead to 4-2 via an RBI double from Torres.
Reliever Sam Mitchell replaced Crimson Tide starting pitcher Bobby Alcock on the mound in the top of the fourth. In his first start of the season, Alcock fired three innings, allowing two runs and two hits, with no walks and one strikeout on 39 pitches.
Mitchell worked a scoreless fourth, then ran into trouble in the fifth inning, allowing an RBI groundout to Cooper Blauser to make it 4-3. Kaden Humphrey took over for Mitchell and had to leave due to an injury after just two pitches. South Carolina transfer Ashton Crowther was called upon to replace the injured Humphrey and notched a strikeout to strand two runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, left fielder Justin Osterhouse was hit by a pitch, then stole second base to make the Crimson Tide a perfect 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts on the season. Osterhouse was banged up on the slide but remained in the game.
Second baseman Brennan Holt drove in Osterhouse via an RBI single to extend the Crimson Tide’s lead to 5-3. Osterhouse narrowly avoided the tag from the catcher, but hurt himself on the slide and exited the game with a quad injury. Center fielder Bryce Fowler was then hit by a pitch directly in the helmet that just barely missed him in the face, and he was forced to leave the game to be evaluated for a concussion.
Shortstop Justin Lebron followed with a sacrifice fly, giving the Crimson Tide a 6-3 advantage. Freshman Chase Kroberger and Tuscaloosa native Eric Hines replaced Fowler and Osterhouse in left and center field.
Crowther recorded seven huge outs, earning himself the win before Hagan Banks came in relief in the top of the eighth inning and worked around a walk and recorded a pair of strikeouts to put together a scoreless frame. Banks remained in the game for the ninth and served up a two-run double to Matthew Cash, cutting the Crimson Tide’s lead to 6-5.
On the final out of the game, Trey King lined a ball to left center field in between the two freshmen Kroberger and Hines, who collided on the play, but Hines was able to hang on for the final out.
Game 2: Alabama 13, Alabama State 4
Alabama completed its midweek action with a 13-4 win over Alabama State. It’s their second win over the Hornets this season.
“A win’s a win, winning on the road is hard against anybody,” Vaughn said. “We were in a dogfight with these guys two weeks ago, and we got after them tonight.”
Alabama’s offense showed no mercy to the Hornets pitching, scoring at least one run in 7 out of the 9 innings. They also had no issues getting runners on base, with a total of 10 hits, 15 walks, and seven batters who were hit by pitches. There could have been way more runs, as the Crimson Tide left 19 runners on base.
“If they’re going to put us on for free 22 times, then there should probably be more than 13 (runs) up there, but we lacked that bases-clearing double, you could say,” Vaughn said.
Alabama was unstoppable on the base path, tying a program record with nine stolen bases in a game, and is now a perfect 30-for-30 in stolen bases thus far this season. Flower and Osterhouse were also back in the starting lineup Wednesday night after injury scares on Tuesday night.
The Crimson Tide started to pull away in the fifth inning, scoring five runs in the inning. With Alabama up 3-0, Lebron hit a solo homerun to make it 4-0. Alabama was then able to score four more runs, with three of them coming from back-to-back-to-back at-bats.
Alabama added another run in the fifth, with a double from Lemm to make it 9-0. However, Devin Chandler hit a 3-run homer in the sixth to get Alabama State on the board.
Alabama added four more runs between the seventh and ninth innings, but none of them were scored from a hit. Vaughn scored in the seventh from a wild pitch, Lemm and Torres walked in runs with the bases loaded, and Caleb Barnett also walked in a run with the bases loaded in the ninth.
The Hornets scored from a Skywalker Mann RBI single in the ninth, but by then it was too late and Alabama won 13-4.
Joe Chiarodo got his first win of the season and only lasted 2.0 innings. He faced 10 batters and allowed only two hits and a walk.
Alabama’s bullpen continued to shut down the Hornets. In the remaining 7.0 innings, Alabama had four different pitchers and allowed seven hits and four earned runs. Sophomore Athony Pesci was the most impressive, lasting 2.1 innings and allowing one baserunner.
Alabama will now have one final series before SEC play, hosting North Florida from March 6-8. The opening game will be at 6 p.m. CT.
