We’re nearly halfway through the second stop of the 2026 Pro Swim Series in Westmont, and the second night of finals has five scratches to report, with one coming from an ‘A’ final and four from ‘B’ finals.
The sole ‘A’ final scratch of the session is Brazilian Stephan Steverink bowing out of the men’s 800 freestyle final. He qualified third in prelims yesterday with a time of 8:04.84 but swam the 400 IM this morning, qualifying sixth into the ‘A’ final with a 4:27.28.
Steverink, 22, is best known for his breakout performances at the 2022 World Junior Championships, where he won gold in the 400 free and silver in the 400 IM. He was just over ten seconds off his lifetime best of 7:54.49 in the 800 prelims, while he has been as quick as 4:14.97 in the 400 IM.
With his scratch, Kazakhstan’s Lev Cherapanov (8:23.40) moves into the championship final. He’s been as quick as 8:15.23 in the event, a time he clocked in April of last year.
25-year-old Isabelle Odgers dropped the 100 breaststroke semifinals, where she qualified 15th in 1:13.26, to avoid a double with the 400 IM, in which she advanced eighth this morning. The former USC Trojan owns career bests of 1:08.17 in the 100 breast and 4:46.90 in the 400 IM.
Her scratch bumps New Trier Aquatics’ 16-year-old Riley McNeal into the semifinals. McNeal clocked 1:13.52 this morning, about a second and a half off her best of 1:12.08.
The 2024 world champion in the 200 IM, Canada’s Finlay Knox scratched the men’s 50 backstroke semifinals, where he had qualified 12th in 25.92, in favor of the 100 breaststroke semifinals, where he advanced 14th in 1:02.65.
Known for swimming a wide variety of events in-season, Knox also placed 10th in the 50 fly (23.98) and 10th in the 100 free (49.94) earlier in the meet, both a touch off his lifetime bests of 23.57 and 48.29. His scratch promoted Sohib Khaled into the ‘A’ final, but he appears to have declined, bumping Adam Maraana (26.43) instead.
Maraana, a 22-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina, was just over a second off his career best of 25.30 from summer 2023.
Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics’ Maya Hetland has withdrawn from the 400 IM ‘B’ final, giving unattached Erin Griffis the opportunity for another swim. Hetland qualified fifth into the ‘A’ final of the 200 fly this morning and appears to be focusing her energy there. She clocked 5:06.68 in the 400 IM prelims, nearly 15 seconds off her best time of 4:52.06.Griffis, 16, was just over 12 seconds off her personal best of 4:57.31.
Finally, unattached Gunnar Seversen has declared he will not start in the men’s 400 IM ‘B’ final, with Dillon Spooner of Indian River Aquatics the beneficiary.
Seversen, 20, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, had no other events this morning, making his scratch the most puzzling of the bunch. He narrowly missed his best time in the process, clocking 4:37.14, just over half a second shy of his 4:36.69 from July 2024.
Spooner, headed to St. Bonaventure in the fall, was about ten seconds off his lifetime best of 4:34.73.
