ROCHESTER – Monroe County is stepping up its efforts to combat drug overdoses by offering fentanyl and xylazine test strips in indoor naloxone boxes.
Deb Leach, outreach supervisor for the Monroe County Addiction Services Team, said reports from the medical examiner’s office showed an increase in deadly fentanyl and xylazine overdoses.
“We thought that it was very important that we get them out and we have them available all the time for folks whenever they need them,” said Leach. “Make sure that they have access to test their supplies if they’re interested in doing so.”
The test strips have been available in all indoor naloxone boxes since last December. However, they are not in outdoor boxes due to temperature restrictions.
“We want to make sure that we’re not giving out anything that may be faulty,” said Leach. “If it falls outside of that temperature, it may not work properly. We want to make sure that we’re giving out everything that we can to the best of our ability, not giving out something that may not work because it’s too cold.”
Some boxes, especially those on Lyell and Clinton Ave., need restocking two or three times a week. Leach encourages anyone seeking substance abuse help to contact the Addiction Services hotline at 585-753-5300, which is available 24/7.
