Emma Raducanu is stuck in her own personal Groundhog Day ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Emma Raducanu probably doesn’t have an alarm clock.

These days, let’s face it, who does. So the chances of her scrambling to silence Sonny and Cher’s I Got You, Babe, the daily refrain of the 1993 classic Groundhog Day, seem slim.

But in many other ways, her life really is starting to resemble the seminal Bill Murray work, the film in which a news reporter finds himself cursed to live out the same day over and over again.

Because Raducanu’s pattern of optimism, injury, illness, an early exit and a sacking of a coach has become as familiar as it has frustrating.

She went into pre-season full of optimism after hiring a new coach Francis Roig, only to pick up a bone bruise in her foot, barely hit a ball for a month, crash out of the Australian Open in the second round and then sack the aforementioned Roig.

In the Middle East, she arrived to play Dubai and Doha with no permanent coach at all (for the second year in a row), then got ill and lost in the first round of both tournaments.

It should be noted she did also record a run to the final of Cluj in among all this, but having ended last season early due to illness in the Far East, this latest chest infection last month completed the circle.

Of course, some of these incidents fall in the realm of bad luck, although Raducanu’s persistent failure to complete a pre-season without interruption brings to mind Lady Bracknell’s aphorism about misfortune and carelessness.

The coaching roundabout though is entirely controllable. Roig had arrived on trial after Wimbledon, won a six-month contract within a few weeks, and was subsequently given an extension for the 2026 season. Then, after a curtailed pre-season and an unsatisfactory Australian Open, he was sacked. He didn’t seem to see it coming. Perhaps Groundhog Day wasn’t that big in Spain.

“I was surprised on the one hand but then we’ve seen that coaches don’t stay long with Emma,” says Tim Henman, who coached alongside Roig as Great Britain team captain in January’s United Cup.

“I saw them working on court and I think Francis is a great guy and a very good coach with a lot of experience.

“And so I was surprised that they went their separate ways, but again, it’s Emma’s prerogative and we’ve seen in the last 3 or 4 years, coaches don’t last long, so that’s her choice.”

Her choice, although not made alone. Father Ian has been an influential voice at various points in her career and is understood to be heavily involved again, as is Raducanu’s mother Renee. Then there is IMG agent Jill Smoller, who used to manage Serena Williams’s affairs and most recently accompanied her to Japan for the launch of her new Uniqlo deal.

That contract, replacing long-term sponsor Nike and rumoured to be worth more than £2.5m, was at least a positive after the disappointment of Australia, Doha and Dubai, and testament to her enduring commercial appeal, in spite of everything.

Her venue this week is Indian Wells, sometimes called Tennis Paradise, where she will be reunited with Mark Petchey, another echo of the past, having worked with her as a teenager and then more recently last spring. The inadequacy of that arrangement – he was and is still employed as a commentator and pundit on the tour – was clear to everyone, Raducanu included, yet here we are again.

“He has a lot of experience,” explains Laura Robson, a sometime broadcast colleague of the former British No 1 who everyone knows as “Petch”.

“He is a tactical guy and also a technical guy, and I think they get on really well in that regard. She’s got a similar tennis brain.

“But I think no matter who she was working with, the level is there. It’s just about being a bit more consistent.”

Will the American hard-court swing be springtime for Raducanu, when she finally discovers what she has been looking for? Or will Punxsutawney Petch predict six more weeks of winter?
