The University’s Young Americans for Freedom hosted former ESPN host and current podcaster Sage Steele on Tuesday. Roughly 30 people attended, including YAF members from the University of South Alabama.
UA YAF is part of a larger conservative national project by the Young America’s Foundation, which aims to create conservative young Americans on college campuses.
To enter the event in John England’s multipurpose room, guests had to walk through metal detectors and be searched by security. In addition to UA security, officers from the University of Alabama Police Department were also present.
Steele’s topic for her speech was “choose the harder right,” a principle from the West Point Academy’s cadet prayer that encourages soldiers to do what is right instead of the “easier wrong.” This is something she said that was instilled into her from a young age by her dad.
Steele began working for ESPN in 2007 as a sports broadcaster, something she said was her “lifelong dream.” In 2020, she was suspended from her assignments after appearing on former NFL player Jay Cutler’s podcast and making remarks regarding ESPN’s vaccine policy and Barack Obama’s decision to put his race as Black on the Census. She also made comments regarding female needing to dress modestly and be held accountable for incidents of sexual harassment.
“Is the First Amendment for all of us, or just for some?” Steele said regarding her suspension.
Steele ended her speech encouraging the audience to learn from her and “not take nearly a decade to decide to speak up.”
“This is why I’m here now. To ask and beg of you to not live in fear,” Steele said. “You will regret it, and I hate that I took so long.”
Lily Montgomery, a senior majoring in public relations, said the event made her want to learn more about Steele and her platform. “I’ve always been a person who’s wanted to see all sides,” she said.
