ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city of Rochester has turned to a search firm to help fill a veterinarian position that has been vacant for nearly three years.
A city spokesperson said Rochester Animal Services has relied on part-time veterinarians to fill the gap in the meantime.
In August 2025, the city received 11 applications for the position, but only two were qualified. To attract more applicants, the city entered a two-year agreement with Veterinary Recruiting and Staffing Solutions for $28,000.
The search firm will look for qualified vet candidates across a wide area and make them aware of the opening. The job offers a salary between $114,000 and $121,000.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for a veterinarian was more than $125,000 a year in 2024.
Director of Animal Services Staci Papadoplos said scheduling would be easier with a full-time veterinarian.
“Case work wouldn’t have to transfer from one doctor to the other, so that would be a whole lot easier too,” she said. “Just having one person we could rely on would just make the operation a whole lot easier.”
The city has a residency requirement for most positions, but there is not a residency requirement for the veterinarian position.
The city previously had a contract with VetNet America, but it was terminated. This is the first time the city has worked with Veterinary Recruiting and Staffing Solutions.
