ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Aquinas boys hockey team celebrated a milestone achievement this week by winning their first Section Five title in nearly 20 years. The victory was especially meaningful for Reagan Gray, the team’s goalie, who was honest about his struggles this year.
Gray acknowledged his struggles during the regular season. “It’s no secret. I didn’t have the best regular season before the playoffs,” Gray said. Despite being in and out of the lineup down the stretch, Gray returned strong for the playoffs.
Head Coach Chuck Dossier praised Gray’s resilience. “He had been sick really bad and then came back and had such a great week of practice,” said Dossier.
Gray’s performance in the playoffs led the way for the Irish. The senior goalie allowed just one goal in the quarterfinals, three in a 4-3 semifinals win against reigning Section V champs, Victor, before saving his best for last. “It was the lock-in mentality. Like how bad you want it? And it just shows here tonight that we wanted it more,” Gray said on Monday.
Captain Caleb Wood described Gray’s performance against previously unbeaten Webster Schroeder as “unreal.” Gray held the Warriors scoreless through two periods, and even when a pair of goals slipped through in the third, Aquinas held on for the win, in part, thanks to 29 saves from Gray.
“For my goaltender that you know has been doubted. People are writing about him, doubting him. And he clearly showed that he was a great goalie today and I’m super super proud for him as well,” said Dossier after the win.
Gray reflected on the team’s victory. “The feeling’s phenomenal. The boys, we just never thought we couldn’t do it. Everybody was saying the exact opposite, that we’re not able to do it, but we just never thought we couldn’t,” Gray said. “We knew if we stuck together, we would make things happen, and that’s what happened.”
Aquinas will face Rye in the state quarterfinals on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:15 pm at Lakeshore Ice Rink.
