Al-Hasakah: Coalition Shoots Down Drones, Iranian Missile Intercepted Near al-Qamishli ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

International Coalition forces intercepted a drone attack targeting a military base near al-Qamishli in northeastern Syria, amid escalating regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and growing instability affecting Syria and the Turkish border.

An Enab Baladi correspondent in al-Hasakah reported that, on Tuesday evening, March 3, Coalition forces shot down several drones that were headed toward the Kharab al-Jir base in Rmeilan, east of al-Qamishli city in al-Hasakah governorate, northeastern Syria. The drones were intercepted before reaching their target.

No official information has been released regarding the extent of material damage inside the base or whether there were any casualties.

Local sources reported hearing loud explosions in the vicinity of the base, coinciding with intensive aircraft activity over the area.

The Kharab al-Jir base is one of two main bases where US forces remain stationed in al-Hasakah governorate, alongside the Qasrak base located north of the province.

In recent weeks, US forces have withdrawn from several other positions in northeastern Syria as part of a gradual redeployment. The withdrawal process from the Qasrak base is still ongoing, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.

Iranian missile falls near al-Qamishli

Parallel to the drone incident, an Iranian missile fell on Wednesday morning in the village of Qazlajah, south of al-Qamishli, after being intercepted in the skies over the region. According to local sources cited by Enab Baladi, the missile caused no material damage or human casualties.

Later, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that NATO air defense systems deployed in the eastern Mediterranean had successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran toward Turkish airspace.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 4, the ministry confirmed that the interception was carried out successfully, with no reported casualties. It stressed that Turkey “retains its full right to respond to any hostile act targeting its security and territorial integrity.”

Sources in al-Qamishli told Enab Baladi that the intercepted missile had likely been heading toward Turkish territory and was shot down approximately five kilometers before crossing the border, explaining the fall of debris in the southern countryside of al-Qamishli.

Regional escalation reaches Syria

The incidents come amid an unprecedented military escalation led by the United States and Israel against Iran, fueled by tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear program, its regional presence, and repeated US accusations that Iran supports armed groups across the Middle East.

The stretch of territory from northeastern Syria to the Turkish border has witnessed heightened alert levels, given the overlap of regional and international interests and the presence of military bases operated by the US-led International Coalition.

Al-Hasakah governorate, particularly Rmeilan and al-Qamishli, remains one of the key areas of remaining US military deployment in Syria. The region hosts strategic oil and gas fields, in addition to military facilities used in operations against the Islamic State group.

The targeting of the Kharab al-Jir base with drones, along with the fall of an Iranian missile near al-Qamishli, reflects the spillover of regional tensions into Syrian territory, especially with US bases positioned near the Turkish and Iraqi borders.

In recent days, several media outlets have also raised questions about the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey and the possibility of it being targeted by Iran, particularly after Tehran struck multiple US bases in the Gulf.

Incirlik is one of the most prominent bases used by the United States within its regional military arrangements. It hosts US forces and supports logistical and air operations conducted under NATO missions.

The base has gained particular strategic importance amid the current tensions, serving as a key anchor point for US military presence in the eastern Mediterranean. Its proximity to theaters of escalation makes it part of the broader deterrence and deployment equation should confrontation between Washington and Tehran further expand.

As mutual attacks and escalating rhetoric continue, northeastern Syria, including al-Hasakah and al-Qamishli, remains directly vulnerable to any new military developments, given the intertwined airspace and strategic zones between Syria and Turkey and the presence of international actors in the region’s security landscape.
