When Mert Egilmez got laid off from a high-paying job in the tech industry, he reconsidered whether he wanted another job where he spent all day staring at a computer screen.
But the longtime San Diego resident always wanted to run his own business and he enjoys food. Especially pizza.
So, he went from making dough to baking dough.
This past week, Egilmez, 31, started a new chapter in his life by opening his own pizza restaurant, Pizza Guys, in a shopping center not far from the University of San Diego.
“I’m really excited,” he said. “I feel like this is a great opportunity for me to serve the community around me. You know, I want to get to introduce myself to every single customer.”
Although Egilmez had enjoyed his recruiting and sales career in high tech, he wanted to do something that was more engaging. After researching different franchises, he settled on Pizza Guys, a company that was started in 1986 and has locations in Pacific Beach, Escondido and Oceanside.
Egilmez plans to support the community by hosting fundraisers for schools and sports teams while prioritizing customer service and good food.
“We make our dough in house every morning,” he said. “It’s going to be fresh. We only use premium products so we’re going to provide them great customer service and quality pizza.”
Egilmez likes the combo pizza, which includes salami, pepperoni, ground beef and sausage. But the menu also includes pasta, pasta salad, wings and flat breads.
As for the high-tech industry he left behind, it’s safe to say that Egilmez isn’t looking back.
“Of course, opening a business is risky, you know,” he said. “But sometimes, if you want to be successful in life, you need to take risks.”
Pizza Guys is located at 5375 Napa St. in the shopping center off the Morena/Linda Vista stop on the San Diego Trolley’s Green Line. The shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
