Heavy, dense fog across parts of the Chicago area Wednesday morning could make for dangerous driving conditions during the rush hour commute, the National Weather Service warned, with a dense fog advisory in effect for multiple counties and visibility at a quarter mile or less.
“If driving, slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you,” the NWS said.
The advisory, issued for Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage Counties in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin will last through at least 9 a.m.
About 5:30 a.m., photos and video from Mount Prospect to Lincolnshire showed heavy fog covering roads, with foggy conditions to last over the next several hours.
As the fog lifts, the day is expected to remain cloudy, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, with a low-end chance for isolated showers to the south and a high temperature of 46 degrees.
Later Wednesday night into Thursday morning, more rain was expected.
“Really seeing that rain developing late tonight into the day Thursday,” Roman said, with steady rain expected starting at 11 p.m. and through the morning commute.
Temperatures Thursday in the Chicago area would be a wide range, Roman said, with 40 degree readings to the north and 50 degree readings to the south.
Friday starts off dry, Roman said, but scattered showers and storms will move in by afternoon. At that time, the Climate Prediction Center has placed the area under a ‘slight’ risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.
Friday will also see near-record warmth, Roman said, with temperatures near 70 degrees. The record high temperature Friday, of 70 degrees, was set in 2000.
“We could either tie or break that record,” Roman said.
