With Congress set to vote on war powers resolution, here’s where local Congress members stand ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

WASHINGTON — The Senate is set to vote on Wednesday on a war power resolution that would restrict President Donald Trump’s ability to carry out strikes without Congress’s approval.

The House is set to vote on a similar bill on Thursday. It comes as the conflict in the Middle East widens. Some Congress members have criticized the president’s for not seeking Congress’ approval before launching airstrikes on Iran last Saturday. So, where do local Congress members stand on the war?

Rep. Morelle and Rep. Tenney

In a statement released after the airstrikes on Iran, Rep. Joe Morelle of the 25th District said he’s skeptical of the president’s actions. He said getting involved in this conflict comes as a cost to the American people:

“President Trump authorized new, widespread military strikes against Iran. The President is empowered to act militarily if there is an imminent threat to the United States. I am anxious to see evidence of an imminent threat but remain highly skeptical. If his past actions are any guide Donald Trump has no regard for the Constitution and the Rule of Law.“

“The Iranian regime is repressive, destabilizing, and its nuclear ambitions pose a global threat. But these strikes risk real costs and consequences for the safety and security of the American people.“

“If Iran’s nuclear capabilities were truly ‘obliterated,’ as the President claimed last year, renewed military action should be unnecessary. The American people do not support and should not be asked to bear the burden of another unending war in the Middle East. I am praying for the safety of our troops and all those caught in harm’s way.”

On the other hand, Rep. Claudia Tenney of the 24th District praised the president’s decision and said she hopes the Iranian people can take back their country. Here’s the statement:

“As the Department of War brilliantly executes Operation Epic Fury against the despotic Islamist Iranian regime, I pray for the safety of all our U.S. service members and allies in the region,”

“I hope the brave Iranian people will take back their country from the brutal mullahs, and the people of Iran can have a future of peace and prosperity, instead of tyranny and terrorism.”

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand have both called for a vote on the war powers resolution and have criticized the U.S. involvement in the conflict. Schumer said that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, but the American people don’t want another costly war in the Middle East. Here’s the statement:

“When I talked to Secretary Rubio, I implored him to be straight with Congress and the American people about the objectives of these strikes and what comes next. Iran must never be allowed to attain a nuclear weapon but the American people do not want another endless and costly war in the Middle East when there are so many problems at home.”

“The administration has not provided Congress and the American people with critical details about the scope and immediacy of the threat. Confronting Iran’s malign regional activities, nuclear ambitions, and harsh oppression of the Iranian people demands American strength, resolve, regional coordination, and strategic clarity. Unfortunately, President Trump’s fitful cycles of lashing out and risking wider conflict are not a viable strategy.”

“The administration must brief Congress, including an immediate all senators classified briefing and in public testimony, to answer these vital questions. The Senate should quickly return to session and reassert its constitutional duty by passing our resolution to enforce the War Powers Act. My prayers are with our brave American servicemembers.”

Gillibrand said she’s in opposition to “endless wars” and is praying for the safety of American service members. Here’s the statement:

“I came to Congress in opposition to endless wars. Trump’s actions today risk exactly that again. Congress should return to session immediately to vote on a war powers resolution.”

“The president lacks the constitutional authority – and in my opinion, the temperament and judgment – to act in such a reckless fashion. I pray for the safety and well-being of our brave service members and American families in the region. America voted for lower costs, not forever wars.”

How likely in the resolution to pass?

The war powers resolution is unlikely to pass through the Republican-controlled Congress. It would almost certainly be vetoed by Trump even if they were to pass.

Since launching the attacks, the Trump administration has sought to win the support of lawmakers on Capitol Hill and the public. So far, six U.S. service members have been killed in the conflict.
