Men’s basketball snaps eight-game win streak with 98-88 loss to Georgia ...Middle East

No. 16 Alabama men’s basketball fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 98-88 in its final SEC road test on Tuesday evening at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, snapping its eight-game winning streak.

“We’ve got to get some maturity about us,” head coach Nate Oats said postgame. “Our guys got to understand that nothing’s easy in this league. There’s not a road game that anybody’s gonna hand to you, and I didn’t do a good enough job getting these guys mentally ready to play tonight.”

Star guard Labaron Philon Jr. led the Crimson Tide in scoring with 26 points on 8/16 shooting. He was followed in scoring by fellow guards Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Aden Holloway, who notched 19 and 15 points, respectively.

Oats said postgame that Wrightsell wasn’t pleased with his teammates’ effort during the loss.

“We’re the only team in the country to play in the Final Four and Elite Eight the past two years, and he’s been a part of both of those,” Oats said. “He knows what it takes to win in March, and that wasn’t it.”

The Crimson Tide struggled to find offense outside its starting five, totaling just 9 points from its bench. True freshmen forwards London Jemison and Amari Allen also struggled against the Bulldogs, with Allen shooting a dismal 1/7 from the field and fouling out.

“He’s got to get back locked into making winning plays,” Oats said of Allen. “If you get back locked into making winning plays and making some tough plays, his offense would just come. He’s that talented of an offensive player.”

Georgia began the game with a 6-0 run, followed by a 6-2 run by Alabama. Holloway tallied an early 4 points.

The fast-paced action continued as Alabama held a slim 2-point lead over Georgia with under 12 minutes to play. The teams tallied a combined 33 possessions in the opening eight minutes.

Alabama’s offense went cold midway through the period, as the Bulldogs mustered a 12-0 run to snatch control of the game. Forward Kanon Catchings caught fire for Georgia in the opening 20 minutes, notching 20 points on 8/13 shooting and 4/8 from deep.

Georgia opened the second half much like how it started the first, extending its lead to 12 points with under 16 minutes to go. The Crimson Tide’s offense continued to struggle, making just two of its first 10 shot attempts after halftime.

The Crimson Tide pulled within 7 with under eight minutes to play, before a shot clock malfunction delayed action for over 20 minutes. After the lengthy delay, the Bulldogs came out guns blazing, knocking down 5/6 from 3-point land to propel their advantage back to double digits.

Georgia led by 10 with 2:47 to go and held strong to win by 10, likely cementing itself in the NCAA tournament field with a statement midweek victory.

Alabama will return to action on Saturday at home, hosting Auburn at Coleman Coliseum in the return leg of the Iron Bowl of Basketball. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen on ESPN2.
