SALT LAKE CITY — Colorado fans are painfully aware of some of the ugly results the Buffaloes have posted on the road over the past five weeks.
Yet on a team that leans heavily on freshmen, the CU men’s basketball team has managed to respond after each and every one of those lopsided losses. And the Buffaloes did it again at Utah.
Just three days after getting routed at Houston by 40 points, the Buffs dominated the Utes in the first half before holding off Utah’s second-half comeback bid in a 92-78 Big 12 victory on Tuesday at the Huntsman Center.
The Buffs entered the game 1-18 in true road games since the start of last season and had lost their three previous games at Utah.
CU took advantage of nine first-half turnovers by Utah to build a big lead, outscoring the Utes 38-12 after an early 13-13 tie to take a 51-25 lead at halftime.
The Utes used hot shooting in the second half — Utah went 0-for-9 on 3-pointers in the first half, but made their first six attempts after halftime — to rally. Utah put together a 19-4 run that cut CU’s lead to 11, and the Utes battled to within nine points before the Buffs finally put the Utes away.
CU’s Bangot Dak scored a career-high 22 points, adding 10 rebounds The Buffs’ backcourt tandem of Barrington Hargress and Isaiah Johnson both turned in big games, with Hargress going 7-for-11 with 19 points and three assists, while Johnson recorded 22 points and four assists.
CU (17-13, 7-10 Big 12) played without starting forward Sebastian Rancik, who was sidelined by an injury.
