David Ross is Back in the Broadcast Booth! ...Middle East

ESPN is on a bit of a spending spree this week. And so far, it’s all good ideas.

On Monday, they announced a new multi-year extension with Senior MLB Insider Jeff Passan, who has evolved into arguably the most trustworthy name in MLB news, rumors, and transactions. And today, they announced a multi-year deal with former player, 2x World Series Champ, Dancing with the Stars contestant, and Cubs manager David Ross!

David Ross Joins ESPN (Again)!

As you’ll recall, David Ross spent a couple of years as an analyst with ESPN after his playing days were over, but before becoming the Cubs manager. But he set down his mic and headset to take over the Cubs starting in 2020 (… rough first year to be a new manager).

Although Ross’ managerial career (four seasons, 262-284 record) wasn’t strictly successful, the decision to move on from him was more about the availability of Craig Counsell, whom the Cubs loved, than any perceived shortfalls of Ross himself. In fact, there’s a non-zero chance that had Counsell simply decided to stay in Milwaukee (or follow David Stearns to NY), Ross could even still be running this team.

Ultimately, I’m very happy with the Cubs decision/timing, but Ross did the best he could with an expensive, aging roster that was being picked apart by trades all while navigating the pandemic season and a labor battle that resulted in a lockout. At some point, he should find his way back into a dugout or leadership position in baseball. But until then, he’ll be adding color for ESPN, something at which he is very good.

So congrats to Ross on the new gig. And good on ESPN for spending money to retain and attract good sports media talent. In this era, that’s increasingly rare.

Oh, I just found this clip of current Marquee broadcaster Boog Sciambi talking to David Ross about his new gig as he continues his role as bullpen coach for Team USA:

After Boog shares the good news, Ross had the following to say: “I’m so fired up, especially being able to work with you, buddy…You’re like the Tom Brady and maybe I’m like Gronk or somebody. I think that’s how it works. I’m so pumped to be back. The ESPN family has been special to me. And I can’t wait to watch some more baseball and get more involved, especially in an environment like this, this has been so special.”

In case you forgot, Ross isn’t the only former Cubs champ to pic up a mic this winter. NBC is also set to hire Anthony Rizzo as one of its lead MLB studio analysts this season. We have more on that story right here:
