Report: Denver Broncos had interest in trading for David Montgomery ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

Denver has a running back need, and the Broncos had interest in trading for David Montgomery.

That, per Benjamin Allbright of 850 KOA.

Montgomery would’ve been a slash trade for George Paton and the Broncos, but instead he went to the Houston Texans.

Denver Broncos had interest in trading for David Montgomery

According to Allbright, Denver tried to trade for veteran running back David Montgomery. But, it turned out the price was too steep for their liking.

4th+7th + an OL for Montgomery is a lot.

Broncos had interest but that price tag too high.

The Texans ended up sending Detroit that package Allbright tweeted about: a 4th, a 7th, and center Juice Scruggs.

When it was originally announced this weekend by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, he said the Lions wanted a Day 3 pick for Montgomery. Well, they got that and a lot more. It’s possible the price inflated as the Texans and Broncos made offers, and Houston’s bid was ultimately higher than Denver’s.

The Broncos going after Montgomery still tells us a lot about what they will do over the next few weeks, with the legal tampering period starting March 9 and free agency starting on March 11.

What almost trading for Montgomery tells us

No, the Broncos didn’t get Montgomery for their backfield to pair with RJ Harvey.

But it does tell us a few things about what we can expect from the Broncos over the next week-plus.

First, they’re willing to make a big trade if need be. There are a lot of free agent running backs available currently, but Payton and Sean Payton aren’t just waiting idly by. They heard Montgomery was on the trading block and they went after him. That’s good news in case another big-named running back, or possibly linebacker, is put on the block.

Second, it gives Broncos Country an idea of what type of back they want to pair with Harvey in the backfield. At 5’8″ and 205 pounds, Harvey is a smaller, speedy back. Denver’s looking to add a bigger, bruiser to play in front of and alongside Harvey.

Montgomery is 6′ and 230 pounds, runs well between the tackles, is a great goal line back, and has reliable hands, too. He’s the complete package.

Rachaad White (6′, 214 pounds) is a similar back who’s used to being a two-back system, just like “DMo” in Detroit. White is a versatile back who can run inside and outside the tackles and is a viable receiver, too.

Another option is Tyler Allgeier (5’10”, 225 pounds) formerly of the Atlanta Falcons. He’s not quite the receiver that White and Montgomery are, but he does have a fantastic ability to get over the goal line. He scored more rushing touchdowns (8) than RB1 in Atlanta Bijan Robinson (7) did last year. In half as many carries.

Then, there’s always bringing back J.K. Dobbins. Despite his injury troubles every year, he was a great complimentary piece with Harvey last year. He knows the offense and the expectations on him, too.

Finally, a longshot is Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Walker won’t be franchise tagged by the Seahawks per Adam Schefter. It seems likely many teams will be going after him, so even though Over the Cap puts his valuation at $6.3 million in 2026, he could easily clear $10M AAV.

The Broncos decided to not put a tender on backup running back Jaleel McLaughlin, so he’s free to sign elsewhere. Meaning they not only need to fill Dobbins’ void, but possibly add two running backs to the roster this offseason.
