Sibling co-founders, guitarist and bassist Randy and Anthony Anderson, posted a video message on Instagram announcing the news. They confirmed Barnes would be leaving the band after having brought up his decision a year ago. Barnes is reportedly stepping away to fully focus on his family, a decision the band has come to terms with and fully understands.
"The bad news is about a year ago, now Mike Barnes, our lead singer, approached us and said that he'd like to step away from RED permanently to focus on his family. And after 19 years, going on 20 years this year, it's something that we completely understand. We've given up a lot to be out there on the road doing what we love, but our families have also sacrificed and given up so much to allow us to be on the road, so it's something that we completely understand and we will honor and respect his decision."

Barnes has yet to fully comment on his decision to leave the band, but did urge fans to purchase tickets for Red's upcoming tour. He also posted a photo with the caption "The Redeemers Coming Soon" that could hint at his next project.
Their third album, Until We Have Faces, further pushed them into mainstream popularity and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 charts. The 2013 album, Release the Panic, debuted at No. 7.
