Who should play Velma in the live-action Scooby-Doo prequel?

The Black Phone's Madeleine McGraw would make a great Daphne!

Priah Nicole Ferguson

Ferguson knows how to bring a brainy, no-nonsense character to life. With razor-sharp one-liners, she stole nearly every scene as Stranger Things' Erica Sinclair. And yet, for all their intellectual overlap, Erica and Velma are very different kids: Velma is earnest and a little socially awkward; Erica is bold and confident. That’s what makes this fan-casting so intriguing. It would give Ferguson the chance to play a different kind of analytical brainiac, while possibly adding a welcome bit of edge to Velma’s traditionally dry persona.

Julia Butters

Butters held her own in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opposite Leonardo DiCaprio when she was just 10 years old, showing a level of poise, wisdom and emotional restraint that would be perfect for a teen Velma. Then she won over audiences as Lindsay Lohan’s angsty daughter in Freakier Friday, proving she has the bite needed to deliver a compelling, modern take on the character, too. Sign her up!

Who should play Fred in the live-action Scooby-Doo prequel?

Heartthrob Fred could easily be played by Cobra Kai's Tanner Buchanan.

Logan Shroyer

The This Is Us actor is currently slated to recur in another prequel—Elle, the Legally Blonde TV spinoff—but in theory, he could still be available for this reimagining. And audiences should be so lucky! Shroyer proved on TiU that he can bring emotional depth to an outwardly over-confident character, and that sleight of hand would work well for a young Fred, who would probably be insecure in his early leadership abilities.

Michael Consuelos

The son of Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa, Michael’s been awaiting his breakout role since he graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2020 (he majored in film and television production but is also an actor). He excelled at playing a young version of his father’s character, Hiram Lodge, on Riverdale, so it stands to reason he could bring some of that nostalgic prequel energy to Scooby-Doo as well.

Who should play Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo prequel?

Jack Champion has starred in a slew of recent hits. Could Scooby-Doo be next?

Casting him would also feel like a subtle nod to Matthew Lillard, who famously played Shaggy in the 2002 film and its sequel, since both actors share a connection to the Scream franchise: Lillard was one of the original killers, and Champion followed in those footsteps in Scream VI.

Finn Wolfhard

Some fans are eager to see Thames play Fred; others have pointed out that he’d actually make a pretty great Shaggy. They’re not wrong: A prequel would likely lean into Shaggy’s origin story—how he became the lovable scaredy-cat we know—and we saw in The Black Phone that Thames has the emotional range to make that evolution feel authentic. Plus, he has Shaggy’s signature lanky, slightly awkward build.

Cooper Hoffman

In Licorice Pizza, Hoffman played a fast-talking, impulsive teen with big ideas and zero filter, which feels somewhat Shaggy-esque. And while he may not match the iconic character’s exact build, he certainly shares his likeness when it comes to his hair color and rumpled charm. Plus, stepping into a Scooby series would mark a fun departure from Hoffman’s more highbrow film work, the kind of unexpected pivot his father, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, took with Along Came Polly.

Frank Welker

Welker has been voicing Scooby-Doo for decades across series and films—his signature “Ruh-roh!” is sacred to fans. Bringing him into a Netflix live-action prequel would instantly lend authenticity to the project.

Nikki Glaser

Back when she first hosted the Golden Globes in 2025, Glaser did an impression of Adam Sandler saying “Timothée Chalamet” that strongly suggests she could pull off a solid “Ruh-roh!” Plus, you know she’d bring the laughs to the press tour.
