Colorado health officials confirm 2nd measles case at Broomfield High School, list new high-traffic exposure areas ...Middle East

News by : (Colorado Sun) -

Colorado health officials Monday confirmed a second case of measles at Broomfield High School, and warned the public of possible contact with the highly contagious disease at high-traffic Chick-fil-A and Chipotle locations in the area.

The newest case is in an Adams County resident but is related to a Broomfield High School case announced last week. Neither of the affected students was vaccinated with the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, shot.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and local public health officials are investigating other potential contacts with the second student, and said any students and staff who may have additional reason to take precautions would be notified by them or the school.

In addition to the long list of potential exposure spots highlighted with the first Broomfield High School measles case identified Feb. 27, state officials said Monday that exposure to the second student with measles might have occurred over the lunch hour at a Broomfield Chick-fil-A on Feb. 25 and a Westminster Chipotle on Feb. 26.

People who have not had the vaccine can still get it to prevent serious disease, within 72 hours of being exposed. First symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash. Those who suspect they may have measles should not go immediately to an ER or other public health location, but instead call ahead to a provider or the local health department for instructions.

CDPHE has a detailed list of all exposure locations and times from the recent cases on its website.

In the first Broomfield High School case, the health agency said anyone at Broomfield High School on Feb. 19, 20 or 23 may have been exposed. High-traffic areas of exposure also included a King Soopers in Broomfield on Feb. 19 and 21, and a PetSmart in Westminster on Feb. 22.

Colorado recorded 36 cases of measles in 2025, the highest total in decades as the disease resurged across the country after having long been considered eliminated. There have already been close to 1,000 measles cases reported nationwide in 2026. This puts the country well on its way to topping last year’s 2,281 reported cases across the country.
