ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The ongoing war in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, is expected to impact gas prices at local stations, despite the United States being the world’s largest oil producer. The conflict has led to tankers being docked, affecting the global oil supply.
Matt Schulz, LendingTree’s chief consumer finance analyst, explained the situation: “If there’s less supply of oil in the world the price goes up. It’s just simple economics.”
Though the U.S. produces a significant amount of oil, the type of crude oil produced domestically is not always compatible with U.S. refineries. This results in the U.S. exporting its light, high-quality crude to Europe and importing heavier crude from countries around the world. The top five are Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. And the latter two play a crucial role in the global oil market, with much of their oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway currently affected by the war.
Schulz added, “We’ve seen over the years that very little affects people’s perception of the economy more than gas prices.”
As gas prices influence consumer perception and spending, experts warn of a potentially bumpy economic ride ahead. To help consumers save money on gas, here’s Deanna’s Do List.
Keep your gas tank at least half full to take advantage of lower prices when available. Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy. Purchase top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency. Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency.
