Hopes were high for Chicago Bears defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr. when the football season began. However, the 24-year-old defensive lineman appears to be at a crossroads as he enters his fourth year as a pro.
Gervon Dexter Sr.’s 2025 Snapshot
Gervon Dexter Sr. appeared in all 17 games and played 665 defensive snaps for the Bears this season. He finished the year with six sacks, six tackles-for-loss, and 11 quarterback hits. It marked the second consecutive season in which Dexter has improved on his sack totals and in the TFL department. However, the number of quarterback hits dipped from 19 to 11. Perhaps more troubling was his showing in terms of advanced analytics, especially as a run defender, where his 44.0 grade was well below average.
Pro Football Focus handed Dexter a 57.7 overall grade, which ranked 72nd of 134 interior defensive linemen. A middle-of-the-pack grade isn’t what anyone was hoping for one season after Dexter’s 69.7 grade checked in as the 25th best among the 132 players in his position group who played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard. The pass-rushing prowess (72.8 grade ranked 20th of 134 interior defensive linemen) was still there for Dexter in 2025, but the rest of his game fell short of leveling up last season.

Gervon Dexter Sr. is entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract signed in 2023. The entry-level deal was worth $6,723,732, included $3,695,612 in guarantees, and came with a $1,889,988 signing bonus. Dexter’s cap number in 2026 comes in at just over $2.139 million and accounts for 0.7 percent of the cap. All things considered, the Bears have gotten good value from their 2023 second-round pick. Perhaps he can close out Year 4 on a high note.
Turning the Page
The bad news is that Gervon Dexter Sr. hasn’t rounded out his game in a way that would merit extension conversations. Coming into the year, there was hope that Dexter would take his game to another level playing in Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen’s scheme. And after watching Dexter put up six sacks and 19 quarterback hits in 2024, it was easy to dream about what another step forward would look like as a Year 3 player. It just didn’t happen.
With that being said, the good news is that Dexter is still an incredibly valuable player. Having a useful rotational defensive lineman who still flashes upside here and there is a good thing. Dexter has shown he can hassle quarterbacks. In addition to his six sacks, Dexter collected 39 total pressures and 11 quarterback hits, so it’s not as as if ther is nothing to work with as the defensive lineman enters his age-25 season. Unfortunately, Dexter’s run defense remains an eyesore that figures to limit his playing time moving forward if he can’t turn it around.
There have been recent reports about Gervon Dexter generating trade interest around the NFL. A part of me wonders if a change of scenery would be good for Dexter, who might have been better suited for the defensive scheme run by the previous regime. But there is also a part of me that believes that Gervon still has a role in this defense. And with a cap number that represents less than 1 percent of the cap spending, I don’t think it would hurt the Bears to hold on to Dexter to see how he responds in Year 2 working in this system.
