If you’re sufficiently cynical, what you see here is the Cardinals acknowledging that their rebuild might take two+ years, and, if so, what you want is continuity at the big league level so you can focus on player development, while also having a manager in place who knows where his bread is buttered (i.e., will do exactly what the front office wants, regardless of game outcome). Then, when the team is competitive in a couple years, you can either move on from Marmol and get the “real” manager in place, or, if things have actually gone really well in the interim, you keep Marmol on. It’s not like we haven’t seen this before around the league.
