Stars Head Out for the WBC, Bregman, Little, Conforto, DH, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We got a surprise dump of snow during the morning rush today, so it took forever to get the kids to school. Feel like that’s happened three or four times now this year, both the timing of the snow dump and the general lack of warning. Turns my morning all sideways.

The Cubs lost 5-1 to the White Sox yesterday, with the lone run coming via Alex Bregman’s first (not entirely real) dinger in a Cubs uniform. He heads out now to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, as other Cubs do this week, too.

— CHGO Cubs (@CHGO_Cubs) March 1, 2026 WBC exhibition games in the States start tomorrow (the Cubs will play Team Italy), and pool play kicks off in Tokyo on Wednesday. Team USA starts pool play on Friday against Team Brazil at 7pm CT. More from Bregman after the game, in which he also doubled and played well, as usual, at third base: Nice to see Luke Little have an outing where he pounded the zone. It’s TBD whether that would work for him as a dedicated strategy, but we know that so much of his struggle in the big leagues has been tied to non-competitive balls and bad counts. And since his body/mechanics/etc. make it very challenging to have pristine command anyway (while also making it difficult for hitters!), why not just focus exclusively on throwing strikes, and see if your stuff can eat anyway? Michael Conforto made his spring debut, and took a walk in three plate appearances. The results on paper won’t matter all that much for the Cubs’ decision on whether to carry him out of Spring Training, but how he looks at the plate will undoubtedly be the biggest factor. By contrast, I do think defensive ability would play a slightly larger factor in the decision on carrying Dylan Carlson or Chas McCormick (with Kevin Alcantara and Justin Dean on the outside looking in because they can be optioned). Conforto needs to be able to cover an outfield corner, yes, but he would be carried because the Cubs think he can bounce back at the plate. Speaking of which, if he were to be carried and if Moises Ballesteros didn’t grab the DH job and never let go, it’s possible Conforto would find himself getting an opportunity there at the DH spot on the regular. Craig Counsell was asked about the DH spot, and obviously Ballesteros gets the bulk of the discussion, together with the idea that you rotate guys around for partial rest by using Matt Shaw:

— MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (@MLBNetworkRadio) February 28, 2026 Expect to see a lot of the outfield bench contenders in action over the next couple weeks, by the way, with Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki gone for the WBC. Pete Crow-Armstrong tells the story of how he and Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn pitched a combined no-hitter, caught by Paul Skenes. Being a player on the 12 and under USA national team back then sounds pretty crazy, eh? Like I said before, if I’m Craig Counsell, I’m giving Seiya Suzuki the right to challenge ANYTHING he feels like challenging:

— Nate Roper (@NateRoper_) March 2, 2026 I would’ve worn like six layers of catching gear and still been terrified (this is a great read):

— Seattle Times Sports (@SeaTimesSports) March 1, 2026 Gonna be some funny interactions like this coming this season:

Yankees pitcher Fernando Cruz seems certain he threw a strike and wants to challenge the pitch. Catcher Austin Wells tells him that's a bad idea. Cruz challenges anyway. ABS says it's nearly 3 inches outside. ⚾️?? #MLB pic.twitter.com/b1pztfm8Xv
