Protestors gathered in downtown Chicago Saturday, hours after a joint strike on Iran was launched by the U.S. and Israel that then prompted Iranian forces to send retaliatory missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.
Around 5 p.m., dozens of protestors conglomerated at Federal Plaza, located at 230 South Dearborn in downtown Chicago, for a “Hands off Iran” protest put together by several organizations.
Protestors at the “emergency” action demanded President Trump go through Congress before carrying out more attacks on Iran.
President Trump, however, said the U.S. couldn’t wait any longer in a speech after the attack.
“They rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions, and we can’t take it anymore,” Trump said.
The strikes — that Trump said led to the death of Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — appear to be the result of unsuccessful nuclear talks between the countries; however, they also reflect the dramatic changes across the region that have left Iran’s leadership in its weakest position in nearly half a century.
Illinois lawmakers swiftly responded to the attack, with many mirroring the sentiments of the protestors by pointing to how the president did not secure congressional authorization ahead of the military action.
“Donald Trump is once again sidestepping the Constitution and once again failing to explain why he’s taking us into another war,” Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said in a post on social media.
