The stat sheet showed a lot of positives for the UCLA men’s basketball team in its Big Ten matchup with Minnesota.
The Bruins shot well in every aspect of the game and outrebounded the Golden Gophers, yet UCLA’s defense failed to show up in a 78-73 loss Saturday in Minneapolis despite a game-high 32 points from Tyler Bilodeau.
The loss on the road, which has plagued UCLA this season, could prove pivotal for the Bruins’ NCAA Tournament hopes after seemingly recently playing themselves off the bubble. The Bruins are now 3-9 away from Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA shot 51% (29 of 57) from the field, 42% (10 of 24) from 3-point range and 83% (5 of 6) from the free-throw line. It held a 30-20 advantage on the boards. Most coaches would gladly take that.
But Mick Cronin can’t be happy with how his Bruins (19-10, 11-7 Big Ten) allowed Minnesota to outshine them: 58% (29 of 50) from the field, 52% (12 of 23) from 3-point range and 89% (8 of 9) from the free-throw line.
It was a disappointing result for a UCLA team that had shaken off a miserable 0-2 trip to Michigan and returned home to deliver a stunning upset of then-No. 10 Illinois and thrashed crosstown rival USC.
Key to those victories was the play of Bruins guard Donovan Dent, who combined for 44 points, 22 assists and no turnovers. While the senior handed out 15 assists with only one turnover against Minnesota, he finished with just three points on 1-of-6 shooting.
Trent Perry struggled as well Saturday. The sophomore guard was held scoreless, missing all seven of his shots.
Bilodeau shot 13 of 21, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, and had a team-high eight rebounds. Eric Dailey Jr. scored 18 points and Skyy Clark added 17. The rest of the team combined for six points.
On the other side, Minnesota (14-15, 7-11) came in having lost 10 of its past 13 games. The Golden Gophers went with a six-man rotation, as each of its five starters played at least 37 minutes and its lone reserve played nine minutes.
Bobby Durkin made 7 of his 11 3-pointers and led Minnesota with 23 points. Cade Tyson and Langston Reynolds finished with 21 points apiece.
UCLA returns from its one-game trip to host No. 12 Nebraska on Tuesday. It finishes its regular season against USC on March 7 at the Galen Center before finding where it lands in the Big Ten Tournament.
