The Class 5A boys basketball second round took place Friday night.

A trio of local teams were in action, and two of them walked away with big wins.

Here’s a look at Friday night’s action, as well as a peek at what’s ahead

No. 3 Severance 81, No. 30 Pueblo Central 41

Severance made an emphatic statement in its playoff opener on its home court.

The Silver Knights built an early 22-12 advantage through the first quarter before blowing the game wide open with a 29-4 run in the second to lead 51-16 at halftime.

Sophomore Christian Powell led three double-digit Severance scorers with 21 points on 6-of9 shooting to go with four assists and a steal. Senior Damarii Wright and junior Max Yahn scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Silver Knights shot 60% from the field.

With the win, Severance extended its win streak to 14 games and improved to 21-3 overall. The Silver Knights will play host to No. 14 Green Mountain (19-5) in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. The Rams secured a 60-58 home win against No. 19 Mullen on Friday.

No. 11 Windsor 73, No. 22 Standley Lake 63

On its home court, Windsor took a 35-25 halftime lead and fended off a late Standley Lake rally to advance to the Round of 16.

The game was tied at 14 through the first quarter before the Wizards outscored the Gators 21-11 in the second quarter. Standley Lake responded with a 21-14 run in the third quarter to trim the gap to 49-46.

Windsor slammed the door with a 24-17 run in the fourth quarter.

With the victory, the Wizards improved to 17-7 overall. They will face sixth-seeded Regis Groff (22-2) on the road in the next round Tuesday. The Fusion picked up a decisive 57-43 home win over No. 27 Palmer on Friday.

No. 16 Frederick 56, No. 17 Roosevelt 35

After a tight first half, Roosevelt struggled offensively in the second half on Frederick’s home court.

The Golden Eagles led 16-9 after one quarter and just 26-21 after two. However, the Rough Riders struggled to score points the rest of the way, as Frederick outscored them 30-14 in the final two quarters.

While the Golden Eagles (16-8) move on to a Round of 16 matchup with top-seeded Palisade (22-2) on Tuesday, Roosevelt wraps up its season at 18-6.

Girls on deck

The second round of the 5A girls state tournament was slated to take place Saturday after the copy deadlines for Sunday’s Tribune.

A quartet of local teams — Windsor, Roosevelt, Northridge and Severance — were in action.
