It appears Donald Trump’s patience has finally run out. After months of growing threats against Tehran, the US and Israel have finally launched air strikes on cities across Iran.
The strikes come after stalling discussions over Iran’s nuclear programme, and threats from the US over Tehran’s violent crackdown on protests.
At his marathon State of the Union address this week, the US President said his “preference” was to deal with Iran’s nuclear ambitions “through diplomacy” – but made a thinly veiled threat to leaders in Tehran.
“I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror – which they are by far – to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Speaking following the air strikes, Trump said the US has undertaken “major combat operations” in Iran and that “we are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally … obliterated.”
It appears that path to diplomacy has run out, with Iranian news outlets reporting explosions in five different cities; Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.
Fars news agency has also reported that several missiles hit University Street and the Republic area of the Iranian capital Tehran. The specific targets and number of casualties are not yet clear.
Iran has been expanding its nuclear capabilities in recent years, something claims it is for civilian purposes. Most analysts and western leaders dispute this, fearing Tehran is instead trying to generate a nuclear bomb.
In 2024, the UK assessed that Iran was enriching uranium to 60 per cent – significantly beyond the 3.67 per cent permitted under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and far beyond enrichment levels considered necessary for civilian purposes.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also criticised Iran’s “general lack of co-operation” over its nuclear programme.
It is not the first time the US has turned to military action to solve its Iranian question; in June last year, the US launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear capabilities in a bid to kneecap the programme.
In January, the US sent a “massive armada” of warships towards Iran, which were poised to take action over its nuclear programme or the repression of protesters, with the Iranian state violently crushing demonstrations against the regime.
Smoke rises following an explosion, after Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel had launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran, in Tehran. (Photo: West Asia News Agency via Reuters)Trump had warned that “the next attack will be far worse” – and this morning’s airstrikes seem at first glance to dwarf last year’s bombings.
It is not yet clear how long they will last, or where they will expand to. Experts previously told The i Paper the US could choose to hit economic targets and communications as well as military sites.
Some also speculated that the Trump could push for all our regime change, but Dr H.A. Hellyer, an expert in Middle East geopolitics and security at the Center for American Progress, said that this was “unrealistic”.
“Iran’s system is deeply entrenched, and removing it would require sustained military presence and long-term security management – something Washington has little appetite for after Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.
Despite his public emphasis on the importance of diplomacy, one expert warned that the Trump had effectively backed himself into a corner in his approach to Iran.
“By issuing multiple warnings against the regime, he has essentially cornered himself,” Bilal Saab, an associate fellow at Chatham House, said. “To stay credible, he must attack.” And this morning, that has finally begun.
