The Chicago area will quickly change course from the springlike weather and 65-degree temperatures that ushered in unseasonable warmth on Friday.
While the day began with frost and below-freezing readings, dry air caused temperatures to rise nearly 40 degrees, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explained.
But come Saturday, we’ll be back to reality as colder air returns.
Following temperatures in the 40s through midnight, readings will drop into the 30s by morning as a cold front arrives. Some spots could encounter temperatures as cold as the upper 20s.
Clouds will thicken before sunrise, making for a cloudy day overall.
While precipitation is expected, how much we’ll get is unclear, as some may evaporate before it even reaches the ground.
Temperatures will remain above freezing with readings in the mid 30s, potentially even reaching the 40s, south of Interstate 80. Jeanes said some light rain may be mixed in, but with temperatures above freezing in the afternoon, accumulating snow isn’t likely.
That may change, however.
Temperatures will likely drop back below freezing in the evening – into the upper 20s or at least around 30 degrees. As long as there’s enough moisture around, a dusting of snow could arrive and produce potentially slick road conditions, Jeanes said.
Then, on Sunday morning, a chance of lake-effect snow will arrive. But if the wind shifts north, the Chicago area could be missed altogether.

For anyone hoping for warmth to return, temperatures will rise next week.
Highs will climb back to 40 degrees on Monday.

A rainy pattern rain begins late Monday night, continues through most of the Tuesday, then again Wednesday night and all the way through Friday, even going into next Weekend. A couple of inches of rain are possible throughout the week, Jeanes said.
