President Donald Trump and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker exchanged barbs on Friday, with the 2026 primary elections and crime in Illinois at the center of the latest clash.
The most recent spate started on Friday after a reporter posed a question to Trump outside the White House.
“Governor Pritzker posted on social media that you’re planning to steal the 2026 midterm election,” the reporter said. “In fact, he says the plan is already underway. How do you respond to Governor Pritzker?”
Pritzker’s post on social media read: “Donald Trump’s plan to steal the 2026 midterm elections is already underway.”
Responding to the reporter, Trump said, “We’ll he’s got to focus on crime in his state. The crime in his state is doing very badly. If we, if we went and took care of it, what would we do, just like Washington, D.C., we have no crime. Memphis, it’s down 82%. Louisiana, you take a look at Louisiana. What he should really do is focus on crime in his state, because there’s too much of it.”
Following Trump’s comments, Pritzker fired back, writing on social media, “Donald, you’re not denying it.”
Heated exchanges between Trump and Pritzker are anything but new.
The two have often taken aim at each other within the past year, especially during increased immigration enforcement operations in Chicago and in wake of what Pritzker previously called “unlawful and unwarranted” plans to deploy hundreds of armed military troops to Chicago.
Just last week, Pritzker took aim at Trump in an unconventional manner.
He demanded the president repay billions of dollars to Illinois residents after his tariffs were rejected by the Supreme Court.
In an invoice Pritzker posted to social media, the governor demanded that each of Illinois’ 5.1 million households receive a check for $1,700 to repay them for the tariffs the Trump administration has collected since the levies went into effect.
“Your tariff taxes wreaked havoc on farmers, enraged our allies, and sent grocery prices through the roof. This morning, your hand-picked Supreme Court justices notified you that they are also unconstitutional,” he said. “On behalf of the people of Illinois, I demand a refund of $1,700 for every family in Illinois. There are 5,105,448 households in my state, bringing the total damages you owe to $8,679,261,600.”
